Philosophy of Medicine
A mind and spirit as clear as the blue sky begins with our health and lives rooted in the earth. Our wellness extends beyond the limits of our own identities and even bodies, intimately entangled with the world around us. To heal, and to build a vigorous and vital health that is far more than simply not being ill, at Deep Root Medicine we work together with you to help you re-establish or further and develop your own stability, your own rooted sense of self, as a part of the world around you. The firmness of the mountains is our birthright, the strength of the stones and the earth is our own.
We are dynamic, living beings, intimately integrated into a vibrant and vital world. Health is meant to be much, much more than simply not suffering the ravages of illness and disease. We can cultivate our health, becoming more resilient, more vigorous, and more at peace with ourselves and the world around us. While Deep Root Medicine is fully dedicated to helping those who are suffering through illness to recover and return to thriving, we are equally excited and motivated to help you realize your full potential. The most complete expression of a healthy life is one that is lived fully, wisely, and peacefully. This is a life that allows you to be the person you know you can be, to be the person you most want to be.
Life is in a constant state of change, and the same openness to novelty that gives us so many opportunities for growth and development can simultaneously cause us a great deal of uncertainty and struggle. In the sometimes chaotic ebb and flow of life, it is crucial that we remain flexible, ready and willing to move and change with new circumstances, while, in our core, remaining still, calm, and at peace. This harmony of stillness and motion is at the center of many disciplines of martial arts like tai chi and meditative movement like qi gong. It is also central to the ideas of balance and harmony that are distinct characteristics of many traditional medicines, and most certainly for systems of Chinese medicine as we practice here at Deep Root Medicine.
My name is Pete Taylor. I have a lifelong passion for traditional medicine, martial arts, and meditative disciplines. I have lived in Gainesville, FL since 2000, working as a web and application developer, and as a local small business owner and consultant. In 2012 I earned a Masters of Arts from the Latin American Studies program at the University of Florida focusing on ritual and medicine in Peru and Ecuador. However, as much as I deeply loved the people I met and the experiences I had been a part of in the Amazon, I knew that what I found most meaningful for me personally was an opportunity to actually help real people, day to day, with traditional forms of medicine, beyond a strictly academic study. Having spent years as an amateur reader of Chinese medical theories along with martial arts study, I was excited to realize that I had the opportunity to study this form of traditional medicine right here in Gainesville. In 2016 I earned my Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Dragon Rises College, completing what had truly been a decade-long dream of being able to work professionally in a healing tradition. I am also a Zen practitioner with the Dancing Crane sangha, and, when I can find time these days, I train in Chen-style Tai Chi at the Whirling Tiger Kung Fu studio.
