First Visit

Your first visit will last longer than subsequent visits, so plan for about an hour and a half. During our first session together we will do a thorough history and intake to make sure we are on the same page in terms of your health concerns and goals, and I will want to take that extra time to ensure that the initial diagnostics are complete. Subsequent visits generally last an hour, and will be modified and adapted according to your progress, or according to your changing circumstance and needs.

Before your first visit there are a few forms that need to be filled out. If you have signed up for an appointment online, links to these forms will be emailed to you, and you can fill them out directly online before you get to the appointment – it will simply look like a standard web form, with questions about your relevant health history and details. We recommend that you do these before the appointment if you have the chance, as this will give us a clear sense of your background and your history before we get working. However, if you did not make your appointment online or were not able to fill out the forms beforehand, we will go through them together when you come in for your first appointment.

The number of sessions you will need depends in large part on the severity of the problem, and how long it has been a part of your life. The longer something has been with you, the more work we will need to do to change that pattern. We will work together to establish what our goals are, and what our expectations should be.

Costs per Appointment

There are a few different kinds of visit that we provide at Deep Root Medicine. All visits involve time for necessary diagnostics, but how we choose to proceed can vary. Many treatments will involve acupuncture. Others may involve bodywork and massage. Often we will combine both of these to some extent, and may well make recommendations for herbal medicine. The difference will simply depend on your goals and needs. Regardless of the therapies chosen, appointments last for an hour and cost $60.

I provide an initial consultation free of charge, which allows us both to feel confident that we mutually understand the concerns and goals that will drive strategy of treatment together. It will also give us a chance to determine whether we are a good fit in working together. If we believe we will be able to effectively work together, then generally we will go ahead with a treatment immediately.

I am committed to helping when and as I can. I recognize that there are times when finances are already stretched thin. If you have worked with me before, received a recommendation to work with me, or simply feel we would be a particularly good fit, but cannot afford the standard $60, do not let that weigh your decision too heavily. When there is cause, I am happy to work with you on the price, until your financial situation stabilizes. Students, seniors, veterans, and others who may find themselves in a more difficult financial situation due to being in a position of service for nonprofit or community benefit can all feel free to ask specifically about lower cost as necessary, and I will do what I can to find something that works for us both. I am also open to exchange of goods and services as well, including via the service-swap site simbi. My first priority is to help where I can, and if we can make it work, we will.

Costs for Herbs

I am consistently surprised and delighted, even after years of experience both personal and clinical, by the effectiveness of herbal medicine, especially when used in conjunction with acupuncture. I prescribe herbs only from companies that I trust to make potent and carefully crafted products. I also am very happy to generate custom formulas for your case, and find it immensely rewarding – custom formulas tend to be even more effective, as they are tailored not only to your pattern of disharmony, but to your personal manifestation of it. However, while herbs are very inexpensive compared to pharmaceutical drugs, it is not uncommon to expect to pay $70-$100 for a month supply, depending on the needs of your case. While with acupuncture treatments it is possible to work with patients on the financial end, herb costs do not leave space to be mitigated. As a patient you are of course never required to buy or use herbal medicine, but if you can afford it, you will see faster and more consistent results in your treatments, and we sincerely recommend them.

We do not currently accept insurance. However, if your insurance plan covers acupuncture and you would like to file with them for reimbursement, we are happy to make the necessary documentation available on request.
